Summer is here. Is your AC up to the task!?

Summer is hot, hot, hot!

Keep a log on your unit!

It’s hot, hot, hot!

With summer here and temperatures so out of control, we will be running our air conditioners a lot.

Make sure that your AC unit is up to the task. It must be running efficiently so that you are not overpaying on your electric bill! To help you, here are some tips:

1. Clean the air filter –  Not only can it potentially damage your unit, but a dirty filter could reduce its efficiency and run you a high bill. Put a reminder on your calendar to clean and/or replace it monthly. You can keep a log right on the front of your unit and check it off each month.

2. Adjust the thermostat – If you can, get a “smart” thermostat. I recently heard about “The Nest,” one of many available on the market. This particular one not only shows you a green leaf indicator to guide you to the optimal temperature for maximum energy savings, but also learns your schedule and then programs and adjusts itself as necessary. Also, remember that FPL recommends putting the thermostat to 78 degrees when you leave the house.

3. Get the AC checked – Even if your system is working fine, you should get it checked at the beginning of each summer. You don’t want your unit to break down on one of the hottest day of the year. Remember that restricted airflow can cause the coils to freeze. So get them checked and don’t forget my 1st tip to keep your air filter clean!

4. Go Green! and buy Energy Star – Purchase the right size high-efficiency unit. Not only can you reduce your carbon footprint, which contributes towards a better future for our children and grandchildren, but you will also create a cleaner and healthier environment in your home or office. And of course, you’ll be saving money in the long run!

Other energy savings steps you can take include increasing your attic insulation, using ceiling fans whenever possible, and making sure  your windows, doors, and duct work are all properly sealed.

If you are buying a new central air conditioner, check to make sure that your unit qualifies for a tax credit. Here’s a helpful link:  How to Apply for a Tax Credit

Have a happy and cool summer!
